Tuscan Experience Itinerary

DAY 1 ROME / MONTEPULCIANO / PIENZA / FLORENCE AREA: This morning meet your driver in Rome and depart by car or minibus to Florence.  Reach the hilltop town of Montepulciano an ancient village full of medieval and Renaissance buildings, famous for one of the oldest wines of Italy, “Nobile” of Montepulciano. Stop to visit to a wine cellar in a typical and suggestive atmosphere, tasting wines and local products such as ham, cheese and salami. Afterwards, proceed to Pienza the Renaissance “ideal town”, built by Pope Pius II, well-known for its pecorino (sheep) cheese.  Continue towards Villa Casagrande, where you will enjoy a 5 night stay. This evening enjoy a welcome “;Tuscan Feast” dinner featuring local wines and traditional Tuscan fare. Buon Appetito!

DAY 2 FLORENCE: After breakfast at the Villa, you travel to Florence for a morning guided walking tour: stroll down cobblestone lanes, through majestic squares and across ancient bridges, pausing along the way to visit and learn about Palazzo Vecchio, Piazza della Signoria, the cathedral and Giotto’s bell tower and the Accademia (Entrance fees and reservations are included). Florence offers the largest number of historical buildings and works of art in Italy, as well as several world-class museums. During the afternoon on your own you might like to do a little leather, gold or clothing shopping near Ponte Vecchio. Return to the Villa, dinner on your own and overnight.

DAY 3 DAY AT LEISURE & TUSCAN COOKING CLASS: After breakfast at the Villa enjoy the morning and early afternoon at your leisure. You can decide to visit the health centre of the Villa, rent bikes, go horseback riding, take a walk in the town (right outside the Villa gate) or visit the cellar and the museum of the Villa which has been host to Popes and Princes.  At 4:00pm, you will begin your three hour “Tuscan Cooking Class” where you will learn the basics of traditional Tuscan cooking as well as savour the foods prepared by you.
Hotel Name: Villa Casagrande. (B/D)

DAY 4 CHIANTI TOUR WITH A STOP AT A BUTCHER AND AT A CASTLE FOR WINE TASTING: After breakfast at the Villa, you depart on a full day Chianti Tour. Meet your local guide and depart for Castellina in Chianti, which stands on the border line between Florentine and Senese Chianti. It has Etruscan roots and always played an important role in the fights between Florence and Siena. The majestic Fortress and the massive walls prove this glorious past. Continue to Greve in Chianti and stop at  Antica Macelleria Falorni, a historic butcher, where you will taste the original Tuscan Salami. Enjoy a visit to Greve in Chianti, where the great explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano was born, as celebrated by the big statue in the main square. Piazza Matteotti with its particular shape and restaurants and shops is the main attraction. The Church of Santa Croce keeps important artworks by Florentine artists such as Andrea Della Robbia and deserves a visit. Then stop at the wonderful Castle of Verrazzano for a visit and wine tasting. Later, return to the Villa. Dinner is on your own tonight.
Hotel Name: Villa Casagrande. (B)

DAY 5 SIENA & SAN GIMIGNANO: After breakfast at the hotel , depart for Siena and a  half-day guided tour of this unique city with the red of the Piazza del Campo  – with an alchemy geometry of the Piazza, suggestively neo-Gothic and cathartic – commanded by the Duomo and surrounded by narrow streets and alleys. Sweet-smelling Trattorias, the sounds of the artisans and spouting fountains; Fontebrande and the mystery of the Diana, a famous river underneath Siena. These are the reasons why Siena opens up its heart more than any other place, as the famous inscription reads on the Porta di Camollia. After lunch on your own, depart for San Gimignano and stop for a Visit and Wine Tasting at a Local Farm. You will have free time in San Gimignano, with its towered silhouette rising from the hills of the Upper Elsa Valley, facing the land of Volterra and positioned right on one of the most important stretches of the medieval Via Francigena. A similar renown can also be claimed by its Vernaccia wine, recently awarded the D.O.C.G., the highest acknowledgement and guarantee for quality in Italian oenology.  Tonight, enjoy a Festive Farewell Dinner at the Villa.
