You begin in Vienna, once the seat of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and view reminders of the city’s Imperial history such as St. Stephen’s Cathedral, Then east to Budapest, created in 1873 when the twin cities of Buda and Pest joined with Obuda to create this beautiful gem on the Danube River. Drive through the Slovakian countryside to Krakow where you will enjoy a walking tour of Old Town. Drive through Poland for visits to Auschwitz-Birkenau and Czestochowa on your way to the Warsaw, Poland’s capital and symbol of its nationhood and the will to survive against great odds. Heading west, stop for a tour in Poznan before your arrival in the once-divided city of Berlin. A morning sightseeing tour leaves your afternoon free in Berlin to explore. Continue your journey to Prague via Dresden. Built on seven hills, Prague is known as the “City of 100 Spires.”

DAY 1 ARRIVE IN VIENNA, AUSTRIA: You will be transferred to your hotel where you have time free to relax or begin exploring. Later, meet your fellow travelers and your Tour Director for a Welcome Dinner.

DAY 2 VIENNA SIGHTSEEING: On a morning sightseeing tour of this “City of Waltz,” visit the Hofburg Palace, the former residence of the Habsberg emperors, and view the Belvedere Palace, Prater Amusement Park, the UN Buildings, St. Stephen’s Cathedral and other reminders of the city’s imperial past. The afternoon is at leisure to discover more of Vienna’s architecture (and pastries!) at your own pace.

DAY 3 VIENNA / BUDAPEST, HUNGARY: Journey east and cross the border into Hungary. Continue through the Transdanubian region, reaching Budapest with time to freshen up before dinner.

DAY 4 BUDAPEST SIGHTSEEING: Charming and beautiful, Budapest was declared a World Heritage site in 1987 and is called the “Paris of the East.” Your morning sightseeing tour includes views of all the main sights: The Parliament, Royal Palace and the Castle Hill area, Fisherman’s Bastion, 13th-century Matthias Church, Heroes’ Square, and Gellert Hill with its Citadel. The rest of the day is yours to explore this exciting city on your own. Perhaps visit the Vaci Utca pedestrian street for shopping and strudel.

DAY 5 BUDAPEST / KRAKOW, POLAND: The road to Krakow winds through the hills and countryside of Slovakia, past the Tatras Mountains, and into the rolling plains of Poland. You will arrive with time for a relaxing dinner.

DAY 6 KRAKOW SIGHTSEEING: A morning sightseeing tour starts with a visit to Wawel Hill, viewing the Royal Castle and visiting the Royal Cathedral. Take a walking tour of the Old Town to see the Main Market Square and Renaissance Cloth Hall, and visit St. Mary’s Church. The afternoon is yours to wander, browsing through shops, sampling sernik (Polish cheesecake) or szarlotka (apple cake), or simply relaxing.

DAY 7 KRAKOW / AUSCHWITZ-BIRKENAU / CZESTOCHOWA / WARSAW: This morning join a sobering tour of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the World War II concentration camp and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Then travel to Czestochowa and visit the Yasna Gora Monastery, known for its blackened picture of the Virgin Mary. You will arrive in Poland’s 700-year-old capital city, Warsaw, in the late afternoon.

DAY 8 WARSAW SIGHTSEEING & FREE TIME: Your Warsaw sightseeing tour includes a drive along the Royal Route, from Castle Square to Lazienki Park and Palace, the summer residence of the last king of Poland. Pass by the Palace of Science and Culture (known as the “Wedding Cake”), the Saxon Gardens, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Monument to the Heroes of the Warsaw Ghetto, and Barbican. Continue with a walking tour of the Old Town, Old Market Square and St. John’s Cathedral. The rest of the day you are free to relax, explore some of the city’s numerous parks and gardens, or perhaps attend an optional late afternoon concert of Chopin’s music.

DAY 12 PRAGUE SIGHTSEEING: Prague features lavish architecture, lush green hills, and graceful bridges spanning the Vltava River. A sightseeing tour starts with panoramic drive past famous Wenceslas Square, the Strahov Stadium and Castle Square. Take a walking tour to visit the Royal Castle of Hradcany with the Cathedral of St. Vitus, the Old Royal Palace, St. George’s Basilica and Golden Lane with the Daliborka Tower. Crossing the Charles Bridge, walk through the old quarter of Prague to view the Jewish Ghetto, Town Hall and world-famous Astronomical Clock.
